Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility
April 24 to June 1
Wednesday May 7 & 28 at 2 pm
Adapted by Jon Jory from Jane Austen
Audiences loved Hedgerow Theatre's production of Jon Jory’s adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice last spring, so they have chosen to follow that with his lively version of Austen’s first novel which retains the full spirit and much of the dialogue from the original, the story of a the Dashwood sisters. When the wealthy Henry Dashwood dies, his son inherits his fortune, forcing his second wife and her three teenage daughters to move in with distant relatives. The two oldest girls, level-headed, practical Elinor and impulsive, romantic Marianne, are of an age to marry, but their lack of dowries reduces their chances of finding good husbands. Austen’s brilliant commentary on society leads us through love and heartbreak, before we find our well-earned happy-every-after ending.
